This course provides an insight into millinery techniques. Students will learn about materials, sizing, millinery stitches and how to block, wire, edge and trim hats in materials such as straw, sinamay and to use feathers.
Students can either block a simple shape and cover with fabric or use a pre-made base. At the end of this course students will produce one simple hat.
A basic level of sewing is required for this course
Possible hats include cocktail hats, cloches, pill boxes, juliette caps and fascinators.
Please bring with you a small sewing kit which ideally should include a
- Thimble,
- Scissors (paper cutting, fabric, small snips),
- Fabric pins, Needles (straw size 7-8),
- Tape measure,
- Ruler,
- Chalk,
- Pens and pencils (including a permanent marker),
- Notebook,
- Waterproof apron
- Ideally a camera to record the stages of work.
I will provide:
- Millinery blocks,
- Drawing pins,
- Sewing machines,
- Wire
- Other millinery materials.
- I will also provide a selection of straws, felts and sinamay and basic trims. Additional trims can be purchased on the day. Please mention when booking if you have a particular colour that you’d like to work in and I will endeavour to have it in stock.
